Topsail Island Fishing Report December 2019

speckled trout

As of December 8, 2019, the Surf City Pier is now closing at dark and the ocean water temperature is 56 degrees. They’ll shut it down around Christmas, so get out there if you want to fish on the pier. Fishing at the pier has slowed way down. There are occasional black drum and mullets coming up over the railing.

If you hadn’t heard, whale were seen at Topsail on December 2, 2019.

In the rivers feeding the sound the Speckled Trout are still biting. The fish are slowing down a bit and artificial grubs and dark colored jigs are still the way to go. If you aren’t catching anything, reel slower! This was an amazing year for Specs – just check out the November 2019 fishing report.

On the beach and in the surf I have been catching mullet, puffers and the occasional trout, all on cut bait. There are good lures for trout as well.

As always, go here for the latest Topsail Island Fishing Report.
